(ANBI STATUS) our charitable entity

Stop Ecocide International Ltd (SEI), a non-profit company limited by guarantee, was set up in the UK in 2017 (original name: Ecological Defence Integrity Ltd) to launch a public campaign to make ecocide a crime at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. This campaign grew very fast.

As a result in 2019 the Stop Ecocide Foundation was set up in the Netherlands to support the growing movement and is the main fundraising and commissioning vehicle for our work. It has ANBi status. The MOU setting out the relationship between SEI and SEF is reviewed periodically; the most recent version may be viewed upon request.

SEI and SEF operate as a close partnership whereby activities furthering the shared objectives of the two entities can be developed in tandem, according to the needs of the global advocacy work.  In summary, SEI is responsible for overall strategy, policy, direction and communications while SEF receives and distributes funds and is the commissioning body for relevant projects (for example; the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide). The Chair of SEF/ CEO of SEI, Jojo Mehta, does not receive payment from the Foundation. We have a conflict of interest policy to ensure fair distribution of funds.

ANBI STATUS

Stop Ecocide Foundation is registered with the Netherlands tax authorities as a Public Benefit Organization (ANBI). This means, among other things, that gifts and notarial donations are tax exempt. This is beneficial for donors and other beneficiaries of the Stop Ecocide Foundation. Every ANBI organization has to publish a number of data via its website.

OBJECTIVE (VISION/MISSION)

Vision

Enable a new international legal framework to protect Earth and all its current and future inhabitants by establishing criminal liability for widespread destruction to ecosystems, so that human behavior is consciously aligned with a widely recognized moral code of respect, peace and duty of care for all life. Based on the principle: 'First do no Harm', this offers protection against ecocide and forms the bridge to a liveable world.

Mission

Collectively raising awareness of the critical importance of protecting the Earth and increasing awareness that destroying the natural world has consequences. Creating a moral and legal mandate that will protect life on Earth and make ecocide unacceptable. Creating personal accountability for key decision-makers whose actions cause or threaten ecocide. Stop Ecocide Foundation aims:

To have Ecocide recognized as an international crime at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague;

To have ecocide recognized as a crime at national and regional level and monitor the effective implementation of all legislation that criminalises ecocide.

To carry out all further actions that are related to or may be conducive to the above in the broadest sense

2023 Financial Report

Some of these contributions are ring-fenced for specific activities.  Signed up donor-supporter members of the campaign ("Earth Protectors") contribute to the Earth Protectors Trust Fund which finances activities directly related to changing the law, with particular focus on support for climate-vulnerable states. This includes: legal expertise and drafting, diplomatic research and strategy, engagement with and events at the Assembly of States Parties of the ICC, diplomatic lobbying activities, ICC related costs, travel costs, etc. See also article 3 of the Earth Protectors Trust Fund document.  In addition, the Stop Ecocide Foundation actively solicits donations for operations, advocacy work, public communications and other costs related to developing global support for recognition of ecocide.

CBF STATUS

The Foundation also has the CBF (Netherlands Fundraising Regulator) Seal of Approval. This means that we have been reviewed by the CBF and you can trust that the Foundation operates with transparency and within strict quality requirements.
